New Power Generation: Black Music Legends of the 1980s (BBC 2 Saturday 3 June 2023)
New Power Generation: Black Music Legends of the 1980s airs Saturday 3 June 2023 on BBC 2.
Documentary delving into how Prince’s global hits like 1999, Kiss, Raspberry Beret, and Alphabet Street radically altered the 1980s’ perception of black music. With the release of the Oscar-winning, semi-autobiographical film Purple Rain in 1984, he became a worldwide phenomenon and began an incredible journey of musical self-discovery that lasted until his death in April 2016, at the age of 57.
Prince was one of the most ambitious and prolific songwriters of his generation, with a discography that included the psychedelic Around the World in a Day, the masterpiece album Sign O’ the Times, and experiments with hip-hop and jazz. Early in his career, his sexually explicit lyrics and performances pushed the envelope, and later, in the 1990s, he engaged in a public battle with his former record label, Warner, over who should own his name and the creative rights to his music. Prince was a legendary musician who was both divisive and difficult to get a hold of during his lifetime.
Prince “Mastermind” and UK soul star Beverley Knight, as well as hip-hop legend Chuck D and Prince, are among the contributors, along with Revolution guitarist Dez Dickerson and Paisley Park label president Alan Leeds.
