As part of ABC News’ month-long coverage of Pride Month, the LGBTQ+ community will be front and center, with highlights including an Emmy® and GLAAD Award-winning one-hour primetime special from ABC News Studios’ “Soul of a Nation” with “The Freedom to Exist.” Among the many transgender people profiled in “The Freedom to Exist” is Oscar nominee Elliot Page, who made headlines when he publicly announced his transition in 2020 and became the first openly transgender man to grace the cover of TIME. Page’s new book, “Pageboy: A Memoir,” details his struggle to come into his own and his desire to promote diversity and acceptance in the entertainment industry. Sexuality and gender identity are also dissected in the conversation, which features audio excerpts from his memoir.

This special will cover the effects of state-wide bans on families, school discussions, the availability of books, the ability of drag queens to perform, and gender-affirming health care. The special will also feature members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies, such as Democratic Kentucky state senator Karen Berg, who lost her trans son at the end of last year and is now fighting to protect the rights of the community.
