The Hacienda: The Club That Shook Britain (BBC Two Saturday 5 November 2022)
This one-of-a-kind film chronicles the amazing tale of a revolution that began within the walls and on the dance floor of The Hacienda, a former warehouse in the heart of Manchester.
The storied club and music venue was at the forefront of youth culture in the 1980s and early 1990s and helped launch the rave and acid house scenes.
The Hacienda, formerly a yacht warehouse, was established in 1982 by Factory Records and the band New Order.
The documentary explores the Hacienda’s rich cultural legacy, which is still going strong in this, the club’s 40th anniversary year of opening. It combines uncommon and never-before-seen archival footage with candid and perceptive testimonies from people who were involved in the Hacienda’s heyday.
Interviews with some of the club’s most important figures, including Noel Gallagher, Shaun Ryder, and Peter Hook (of Joy Division/New Order), are included in the star-studded documentary.
They exchange tales with those who oversaw it during its heyday, such as former Hacienda manager and licensee Ang Matthews, as well as regular folks whose lives were irrevocably altered by the club. In addition, the film explores the Hacienda’s radical beginnings as well as the music and outrageous tales that preceded the development of acid house.
The Hacienda: The Club That Shook Britain has been produced by Wise Owl Films, the Leeds-based factual label of Lime Pictures, and makers of previous BBC Two music documentaries including When Bob Marley/Nirvana Came To Britain.
Airdate: Saturday 5 November 2022 at 10.15pm on BBC Two.
