The story of Ed Kennedy, an accidental hero who begins to receive mysterious messages, as told in the 8 part ABC TV adaptation of Markus Zusak’s best-selling novel The Messenger. But it’s what Ed does with them that really makes a difference in people’s lives, especially his own.

Untidy cab driver Ed (William McKenna) is not the hero most likely to save the day, but one day, he does something that changes everything. The following day, he receives a playing card—the Ace of Diamonds—on which are the addresses of three random people. Whose handwriting is on this card? What the heck is Ed supposed to do with it, anyway?

Ed first examines the people on the card, which includes the oldest woman he has ever seen, a feisty teenage track star, and a terrifyingly abusive husband. Ed doesn’t know his purpose in life, but he ends up at the old lady’s house.
Ed’s efforts to find the other cardholders are less fruitful. Sophie, the fast girl, thinks he’s a creep and runs away from him. And in Dale, Ed sees the horror of spousal abuse firsthand. Ed calls the police to intervene and learns the hard way that genuine assistance is rare.

Ed is contemplating giving up. However, the card resurfaces in an unexpected place, accompanied by a dire message that leaves Ed with no choice but to accept his fate.
