Becoming Karl Lagerfeld, June Premiere on Hulu

Hulu has shared a sneak peek of the upcoming French drama series “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld,” which is set to premiere on June 7th. All six episodes will be available for streaming on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally.

The show transports us back to 1972 when fashion legend Karl Lagerfeld, portrayed by Daniel Brühl, was still establishing his name and had not yet adopted his signature hairstyle. Lagerfeld’s story unfolds as he navigates the fashion world as a relatively unknown ready-to-wear designer.

At the heart of the narrative is Lagerfeld’s relationship with Jacques de Bascher, played by Théodore Pellerin. Jacques is an ambitious young dandy who becomes romantically involved with Lagerfeld but also brings trouble into his life. The series also explores Lagerfeld’s rivalry with Yves Saint Laurent, portrayed by Arnaud Valois, a celebrated haute couture designer backed by businessman Pierre Bergé, played by Alex Lutz.

“Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” immerses viewers in the heady atmosphere of 1970s Paris, Monaco, and Rome. Through extravagant parties and intense clashes between these iconic figures in the fashion industry, we witness Lagerfeld’s transformation from an enigmatic personality to a global icon.

This remarkable series marks the first time that Lagerfeld’s story has been adapted for television. Drawing inspiration from Raphaëlle Bacqué’s best-selling book “Kaiser Karl,”

Jérôme Salle takes the helm as director for episodes one, two, and six of this Hulu series while Audrey Estrougo directs episodes three, four, and five. The series was created and primarily written by Isaure Pisani-Ferry, in collaboration with Dominique Baumard, Jennifer Have, and Nathalie Hertzberg.

Produced by Isabelle Degeorges for Gaumont and Arnaud de Crémiers for Jour Premier, “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” was brought to life thanks to the visionary initiative of Christophe Riandee, the vice CEO of Sidonie Dumas’s production company. The series promises to offer an intriguing glimpse into the life of one of fashion’s most iconic figures when it hits screens this June.
