Daytime Soap “The Gates” Officially Greenlit by CBS
CBS has officially greenlit new daytime drama series, The Gates, which will premiere in January 2025. The show will follow the lives of a wealthy Black family in a posh, gated community. This marks the network’s first new soap opera in 25 years and the first Black-led daytime soap opera in 35 years.
Michele Val Jean, a seasoned writer with an extensive portfolio, will serve as the writer and showrunner for The Gates. Val Jean’s impressive resume includes writing credits on The Bold and the Beautiful, General Hospital, and Santa Barbara. She has penned over 2,000 episodes of daytime dramas and earned multiple Daytime Emmy and WGA Awards for her work on The Bold and the Beautiful and General Hospital. Val Jean will also executive produce the series alongside Sheila Ducksworth, Leon Russell, Derrick Johnson, and Kimberly Doebereiner.
The Gates was developed through a joint venture between CBS Studios and the NAACP, with P&G Studios, a division of Procter & Gamble, as partners. This collaboration aligns with the initiative to elevate diverse voices and enhance the representation of Black artists in the ever-evolving media landscape.
In a statement, Ducksworth, president of the CBS Studios NAACP venture, expressed enthusiasm for the project: “This series will salute an audience that has been traditionally underserved, with the potential to be a groundbreaking moment for broadcast television. With multi-dimensional characters, juicy storylines, and Black culture front and center, The Gates will have impactful representation, one of the key touchstones of the venture.”
The Gates will likely occupy the timeslot previously held by The Talk, which has been cancelled after 15 seasons. The Talk’s final episode will air in December 2024, making way for The Gates to debut in January 2025.
The upcoming series marks a significant milestone as the first new daytime soap opera on CBS in 25 years. It also holds the distinction of being the first Black-led soap opera in 35 years, promising to deliver a fresh perspective to the daytime drama genre.
The specific time slot and launch date for The Gates will be announced at a later time.
