Elsbeth Season 2 Renewal from CBS
CBS has renewed its crime drama series “Elsbeth” for a second season, making the announcement after just four episodes of its first season have aired. “Elsbeth” stars Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni, an astute but unconventional attorney who leaves her successful legal career in Chicago to become an investigator in New York City. In the series, Elsbeth joins forces with the NYPD, working alongside Captain C.W. Wagner (Wendell Pierce) and Officer Kaya Blanke (Carra Patterson).
The series is created by Robert and Michelle King, the duo behind “The Good Wife” and “Evil”, and is executive produced by Jonathan Tolins, who also serves as showrunner.
The character of Elsbeth Tascioni was first introduced in “The Good Wife”, where she was portrayed as an offbeat and eccentric attorney. Preston’s portrayal of the character was well-received, earning her an Emmy Award. The Kings, the creators of “Elsbeth”, have emphasised that while the show is inspired by the character’s appearance in “The Good Wife” and “The Good Fight”, they consider it a separate show with its own unique narrative and tone.
The first season of “Elsbeth” premiered on February 29, 2024, and the show quickly garnered positive reviews and critical acclaim. The series has been praised for its engaging narrative structure, which reveals the identity of the killer at the start of each episode, challenging viewers to unravel the mystery alongside Elsbeth. The show has also been compared to classic detective series such as Columbo and more modern successes like Poker Face.
The early renewal comes as a vote of confidence in the show’s performance and appeal to audiences. In her statement, Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, praised the series for its “singular blend of delightful humor, distinctive ‘how-done-it’ storytelling, and the inventive, brilliant quirkiness” of the titular character. The series has averaged 11 million viewers per episode across multiplatform viewing, with approximately 7.3 million viewers on linear TV.
“Elsbeth” joins a list of 11 CBS scripted series that have been picked up for the 2024-25 season, including fellow rookies “Tracker” and “NCIS: Sydney“, and veteran shows such as “Fire Country”, “Ghosts”, “NCIS”, and the entire “FBI” franchise. The second season of “Elsbeth” is expected to air during the 2024-25 television season, with the first season finale set to air on May 22, 2024.
