The Tragic Case of David Morley: A Victim of “Happy Slapping”
In this episode of Forensics: Catching the Killer, the spotlight is on the heartbreaking story of David Morley, a barman in London who survived a terrorist bombing, only to meet a tragic end during a night out in the city.
David Morley, affectionately known as “Sinders” within the gay community, faced a brutal assault near Waterloo station on October 30, 2004. The attack, associated with the disturbing trend of “happy slapping,” received widespread attention due to its potential connection to homophobia and the shocking nature of the violence inflicted upon Morley. Morley had previously survived a nail bomb attack at the Admiral Duncan pub in 1999.
During the assault, Morley and his friend Alastair Whiteside were approached by a group of youths while sitting on a bench near Hungerford Bridge. One of the attackers, a 15-year-old girl, falsely claimed to be filming a documentary on happy slapping and asked Morley to pose for the camera. Suddenly, the group launched a merciless attack, subjecting Morley to a barrage of kicks and punches. The prosecution described the attack as “random, indiscriminate, and terrifying.”
As a result of the assault, Morley sustained grave injuries and was rushed to St Thomas’ hospital. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he tragically succumbed to his wounds 17 hours later. A postmortem examination revealed that Morley’s injuries were comparable to those seen in high-impact incidents such as road traffic accidents or falls from significant heights.
In December 2005, four individuals, including the teenage girl, were found guilty of Morley’s manslaughter and conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm. The girl received an 8-year custodial sentence, while her co-defendants were each sentenced to 12 years.
The killing of David Morley shook the community and brought attention to the disturbing trend of “happy slapping.” The tragedy served as a somber reminder of the importance of addressing violence and discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community. Morley was remembered as a caring and compassionate person, mourned by his loved ones and the wider gay community.
