HBO Max Highlights February 2023

All That Breathes” and “Empire of Light,” both of which are nominated for Academy Awards, as well as “Puppy Bowl XIX,” the new season of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” and the specials “Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special” and “Marc Maron: From Bleak to Dark” are among the chief highlights on HBO Max this February.

The Oscar®-nominated film EMPIRE OF LIGHT (2/7), along with other content, will debut on HBO Max this month. The Sam Mendes-helmed picture explores the resilience of human connection in the face of adversity. Cinema manager Hilary (Olivia Colman), who is depressed, and new employee Stephen (Michael Ward), who wants to leave the provincial village where he encounters daily struggle, find a place to call home and discover the therapeutic effects of music, film, and community.

The black kite, a gorgeous bird of prey vital to the ecosystem of New Delhi, has been mysteriously disappearing from the skies, and the brothers who have devoted their lives to safeguarding it are profiled in ALL THAT BREATHES (2/7), an HBO documentary directed by Oscar® nominee Shaunak Sen.

On February 12, 2019, PUPPY BOWL XIX will air on Animal Planet, TBS, and online at HBO Max and discovery+. It is the original and longest-running call-to-adoption TV event. When Team Ruff and Team Fluff take to the gridiron in the Puppy Bowl stadium to compete for the Wayfair “Lombarky” trophy, viewers will be treated to more pups, more animal shelters and rescues, and more heartwarming adoption tales than any before throughout the three-hour television matchup.

In its tenth season, LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER (2/19) will continue to provide sarcastic, intelligent, and thoroughly researched analyses of current events in the United States and across the world. Oliver’s amusing and well-honed take on the most pressing political, social, and cultural concerns of the day, as well as lesser-reported topics that inform and entertain, is featured each week on the show. Season 10 takes place in New York and incorporates the show’s weekly topical observations, characteristic deep dives, and distinctive comedic bits.

Marc Maron, a legend in the world of stand-up comedy and podcasting, debuts in his first HBO comedy special, taped in front of a live audience at New York City’s Town Hall. Throughout the hour, Maron discusses age, antisemitism, faith, and the relative benefits of cats and children during a pandemic. The comic also discusses his complex relationship with his father and the loss of his lover in the year 2020. MARC MARON: FROM BLEAK TO DARK (2/11) is a hilarious and unafraid look at the comedian’s trademark style of storytelling, in which he skilfully combines humor and melancholy.

Harley goes to great measures to make her first Valentine’s Day with Ivy the best ever in HARLEY QUINN: A VERY PROBLEMATIC VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL (2/9), while Bane’s attempts to impress an unexpected date go horribly wrong. Meanwhile, Clayface practices some self-love after an unsuccessful online dating meeting.

The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) shorts, including the winner of the HBO Short Film Award ANOTHER COUNTRY and the finalists TALK BLACK, THE FAMILY MEETING, and PENS & PENCILS, will be available on the platform on February 1.

NAVALNY, from CNN Films, HBO Max, and Warner Bros. Pictures, follows Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny through his political climb, attempted assassination, and search for the truth.

On February 1, HBO Max will add several more discovery+ titles, such as the first seasons of LOVE OFF THE GRID, HUNGRY FOR ANSWERS, The Great Soul Food Cook Off, and THE CULPO SISTERS.
