Iconic Australian Soap Neighbours Earns First Emmy Nomination
The Australian soap opera Neighbours has reached new heights with its first-ever Emmy nomination in the Daytime Drama Series category at the 2024 Daytime Emmy Awards. This achievement comes as the show has strategically repositioned itself internationally, including the addition of US actor Mischa Barton to the cast when it returned in September 2023.
Executive Producer Jason Herbison expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Neighbours has been on an incredible journey these past few years, and a Daytime Emmy Award nomination is the icing on the cake! It’s a huge honour to be nominated alongside such iconic US daytime dramas.”
The show will compete against long-running American soaps, including Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, and The Bold and the Beautiful. The nomination reflects the show’s renewed appeal and international recognition.
The 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be aired live on CBS on Friday, June 7, 2024, with the ceremony taking place at the Westin Bonaventure hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
Neighbours has been a staple of television in Australia and the UK since its inception in 1985. With its engaging storylines, memorable characters, and ability to launch careers (including those of Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, and Margot Robbie), the show has left an indelible mark on the television industry.
The show’s enduring popularity led to a fan-driven social media campaign to save it from cancellation in 2022, demonstrating the deep connection audiences have formed with the residents of Ramsay Street.
Now, with its first Emmy nomination, Neighbours continues to cement its place in television history.
