Nominations Announced for the 77th Annual Tony Awards®
The highly anticipated nominations for the 77th Annual Tony Awards® have been revealed, honoring the best of Broadway. The awards ceremony will be broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+ on Sunday, June 16, 2024, hosted by Academy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Ariana DeBose.
Leading the nominations are “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Stereophonic,” with an impressive 13 nominations each. Following closely behind is “The Outsiders” with 12 nominations. The awards will be presented by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, celebrating the exceptional talent and productions of the past year.
The list of nominees is extensive, spanning various categories. Nominees for Best Book of a Musical include “Hell’s Kitchen,” “The Notebook,” “The Outsiders,” “Suffs,” “Water for Elephants,” and “Days of Wine and Roses.” Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre nominees include “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Here Lies Love,” “The Outsiders,” “Stereophonic,” and “Suffs.”
In the acting categories, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play nominees are William Jackson Harper, Leslie Odom, Jr., Liev Schreiber, Jeremy Strong, and Michael Stuhlbarg. Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play nominees include Betsy Aidem, Jessica Lange, Rachel McAdams, Sarah Paulson, and Amy Ryan.
The nominations for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical recognize Brody Grant, Jonathan Groff, Dorian Harewood, Brian d’Arcy James, and Eddie Redmayne. Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical nominees are Eden Espinosa, Maleah Joi Moon, Kelli O’Hara, Maryann Plunkett, and Gayle Rankin.
The design categories showcase the exceptional craftsmanship behind the scenes. Nominees for Best Scenic Design of a Play include Appropriate, An Enemy of the People, Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch, Jaja’s African Hair Braiding, and Stereophonic. Best Scenic Design of a Musical nominees are The Outsiders, Hell’s Kitchen, Water for Elephants, Lempicka, Back to the Future: The Musical, and Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club.
The costume design category highlights the creativity and attention to detail in crafting the perfect look for each production. Nominees for Best Costume Design of a Play are Appropriate, Jaja’s African Hair Braiding, Enver Chakartash, Stereophonic, and Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch. Best Costume Design of a Musical nominees include Hell’s Kitchen, The Great Gatsby, Water for Elephants, Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, and Suffs.
Lighting and sound design play a crucial role in setting the mood and enhancing the audience’s experience. Nominees for Best Lighting Design of a Play include Isabella Byrd for An Enemy of the People and Jiyoun Chang for Stereophonic, among others. Best Lighting Design of a Musical nominees include Brandon Stirling Baker for Illinoise and Natasha Katz for Hell’s Kitchen. Best Sound Design of a Play nominees include Justin Ellington and Stefania Bulbarella for Jaja’s African Hair Braiding and Tom Gibbons for Grey House. Best Sound Design of a Musical nominees are M.L. Dogg and Cody Spencer for Here Lies Love, Kai Harada for Merrily We Roll Along, and Nick Lidster for Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club.
The directing categories recognize the visionary leaders behind these productions. Nominees for Best Direction of a Play include Daniel Aukin for Stereophonic, Anne Kauffman for Mary Jane, Kenny Leon for Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch, Lila Neugebauer for Appropriate, and Whitney White for Jaja’s African Hair Braiding. The Best Choreography category showcases the innovative movement and dance in musicals. Nominees include Annie-B Parson for Here Lies Love, Camille A. Brown for Hell’s Kitchen, Rick Kuperman and Jeff Kuperman for The Outsiders, Justin Peck for Illinoise, and Jesse Robb and Shana Carroll for Water for Elephants.
The Best Orchestrations category highlights the exceptional musical arrangements. Nominees include Timo Andres for Illinoise, Will Butler and Justin Craig for Stereophonic, Justin Levine, Matt Hinkley, and Jamestown Revival for The Outsiders, Tom Kitt and Adam Blackstone for Hell’s Kitchen, and Jonathan Tunick for Merrily We Roll Along.
The Best Play category recognizes exceptional new works. Nominees include Jaja’s African Hair Braiding by Jocelyn Bioh, Mary Jane by Amy Herzog, Mother Play by Paula Vogel, Prayer for the French Republic by Joshua Harmon, and Stereophonic by David Adjmi.
The Best Musical category celebrates outstanding new musicals. Nominees are Hell’s Kitchen, Illinoise, The Outsiders, Suffs, Water for Elephants, Here Lies Love, and Merrily We Roll Along.
The Best Revival of a Play category honors exceptional revivals of beloved plays. Nominees include Appropriate by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, An Enemy of the People by Henrik Ibsen and adapted by Amy Herzog, and Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch by Ossie Davis, Philip Rose, and Peter Udell.
The Best Revival of a Musical category showcases the best revivals of beloved musicals. Nominees include Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, Gutenberg! The Musical!, Merrily We Roll Along, The Who’s Tommy, and Doubt: A Parable.
The Tony Awards, produced in collaboration with Tony Award Productions and White Cherry Entertainment, promise an exciting celebration of the best of Broadway.
