The seventh season of the American police procedural television series S.W.A.T. continues on CBS. Initially cancelled after six seasons, the series was renewed for a seventh and final season, but now an eighth season has been confirmed.

S.W.A.T. stars Shemar Moore as Sergeant II Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr., a Los Angeles native who leads an elite Special Weapons and Tactics unit of the Los Angeles Police Department. Hondo is torn between his loyalty to the streets and his allegiance to his fellow officers. He encourages his team to rely on communication and respect, but when a crisis hits, they are prepared to put their tactical training into practice.

The upcoming episode, “Allegiance“, will see Hondo continue to navigate the challenges of leading a team in his hometown, balancing his loyalty to the community with his commitment to his fellow officers. With his unique perspective as a local, Hondo strives to bridge the gap between the LAPD and the citizens they serve.

Recent episodes have seen Hondo face personal and professional obstacles, including the departure of team members and a clandestine relationship with Captain Jessica Cortez, which has now ended. Despite these challenges, Hondo remains dedicated to his role and is supported by his team, particularly Sergeant II David “Deacon” Kay (Jay Harrington).

First airing in 2017, S.W.A.T. has provided a platform for exploring relevant social issues and has been praised for its nuanced storytelling. The series has received multiple award nominations, recognising its impact in the television landscape.

The future of the series was uncertain due to financial disagreements between CBS and Sony, with Sony allegedly unwilling to agree to a flat license fee for another renewal. However, the show’s strong ratings and international sales have ultimately secured its continuation.

With its blend of action, crime-solving, and exploration of complex themes, S.W.A.T. continues to engage viewers as the team tackles challenging cases and navigates the obstacles of serving their community.

S.W.A.T., “Allegiance”, will air on May 10, 2024, on CBS.
