Weird Britain, 24 April 2024, BLAZE, “Somerset”
Andy Torbet explores Somerset’s rich history and folklore, from ancient legends to mysterious sites. In this episode of Weird Britain airing on Wednesday 24 April, he searches for dragons, visits the grave of King Arthur and Guinevere, and uncovers the story of a famous witch.
Torbet begins his journey in Somerset by seeking out dragons, believed to have inhabited the county for centuries. He then visits the ancient site of Glastonbury Tor, where, according to legend, King Arthur and Guinevere are buried. The Tor is said to be the location of Avalon, the mystical land where Arthur’s sword Excalibur was forged.
Next, Torbet heads to the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey, which claims to be the oldest “above-ground” church in the world. Here, he uncovers the story of Joseph of Arimathea, who, according to legend, asked that the first British church be built on Glastonbury Tor. Torbet also learns about the famous witch of Wookey Hole, who is said to have cursed relationships in the village.
The episode also features a visit to the ancient Roman city of Bath, where Torbet discovers the Roman Baths that gave the city its name. He then travels to the village of Shepton Mallet, home to England’s oldest civilian prison, which was open from 1610 to 1930.
Finally, Torbet explores the county’s literary connections, including the village of Combe Florey, where writer Evelyn Waugh spent his final years, and the town of Cheddar, where the oldest complete human skeleton in Britain, Cheddar Man, was discovered.
Weird Britain airs on BLAZE at 10.00 pm on Wednesday, 24 April 2024.
