Wild Scandinavia Premieres Soon on BBC Two, Rebecca Ferguson Narrates

Wild Scandinavia is a new three-part series for BBC Two that celebrates the wildlife, landscapes, and culture of the northern reaches of Europe. The series is made by BBC Studios Natural History Unit and co-produced by PBS and Sveriges Television (SVT). Each episode is 60 minutes long and explores a different natural world in Scandinavia.

Narrated by Rebecca Ferguson, the series tells surprising wildlife stories of lynx, puffins, orcas, and wolves, alongside the experiences of the people living in this icy wilderness. The series showcases breathtaking imagery of the Norwegian Arctic, Swedish and Finnish forests, Danish tidal shores, and Icelandic volcanoes.

Episode One, titled “Life On The Edge,” follows a coastal journey from the Baltic Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, exploring the harsh and generous nature of the sea. It showcases the birth of seal pups on granite islands, the migration of birds to the largest tidal flats on the planet, base jumpers flying down plunging waterfalls in Norway’s fjords, and the feeding habits of orcas and humpback whales.

Episode Two, titled “Heartlands,” reveals the beauty of Scandinavia’s forests and waterways throughout the changing seasons. It highlights the interconnectedness of the natural world, with ravens outsmarting golden eagles, Sámi herders relying on reindeer, and osprey catching fish from lakes built by beavers. The episode also explores the mating rituals of lynx and the challenges faced by bears in autumn.

Episode Three, titled “Ice And Fire,” explores the dramatic extremes of the Nordic territories, including volcanic Iceland, the high tundra, and Arctic Svalbard. It showcases the survival strategies of polar bears, arctic foxes, and musk oxen in a world ruled by the pendulum of sunlight. The episode also delves into the impacts of climate change on the region and the unique adaptations of creatures like hot spring spiders.

Overall, Wild Scandinavia offers a captivating look at the wildlife and landscapes of Scandinavia, showcasing the beauty and challenges of this icy wilderness. The series combines stunning imagery with informative storytelling to provide viewers with a deeper understanding of the region’s unique natural world.

Wild Scandinavia, a 3 x 60’ series for BBC Two and iPlayer, is made by BBC Studios Natural History Unit and co-produced by PBS and Sveriges Television (SVT). It was commissioned by Jack Bootle, Head of Commissioning, Specialist Factual and Sreya Biswas, Head of Natural History, BBC Commissioning. The Executive Producer is Rosemary Edwards and the Series Producer and Director is Tuppence Stone.
