The stories featured tonight are
THE CHURCH’S FIRM – A whistleblower claims that hundreds of millions of dollars were used to bail out businesses with ties to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and 60 Minutes reports on the $100 billion fortune built by the secretive investment arm of the Church. Former senior portfolio manager at the church’s firm, David Nielsen, talks to Sharyn Alfonsi about his involvement in the federal investigation and his decision to come forward. Guy Campanile is the producer.
THE SPERM WHALES OF DOMINICA – One of the largest animals in the ocean, the sperm whale, is in danger from things like noise pollution, ship strikes, and trash. Cecilia Vega goes scuba diving near Dominica, where hundreds of sperm whales spend the entire year, to learn more about these elusive creatures and the conservation efforts being made to keep them safe. Michael Rey is the producer.
YANNICK NÉZET-SÉGUIN – Yannick Nézet-Séguin, interviewed by correspondent Jon Wertheim, is music director of three major orchestras: in Philadelphia, in his native Montreal, and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, which has placed the responsibility for a radical reimagining of its artistic mission squarely on his shoulders. The Maestro is taking a risk that presenting works by emerging composers will bring in more people and boost the Met’s dwindling box office receipts. Nézet-Séguin, who is renowned as much for his accessibility and adaptability as his virtuosity, explains to Wertheim why he is not concerned about offending opera purists with this radical key change. Nathalie Sommer and Kaylee Tully are the producers.
