In a new interview with Tracy Smith for CBS News Sunday Morning, Oscar-nominated actor-singer Kate Hudson opens up about her complicated relationship with her father, musician Bill Hudson. Hudson, who is set to release her debut album, Glorious, on May 17, describes a state of estrangement from her father, but hints at a possible path towards reconciliation.
“I don’t really have one [a relationship],” Hudson said when asked about her current relationship with her father. “But it’s—it’s warming up. There’s warming up with this all happening…but you know, it’ll be whatever it will be, you know. I have—I have no expectation of that with my father, you know. I just want him to be happy.”
Kate Hudson and her brother, Oliver Hudson, have been estranged from their father, Bill Hudson, for most of their lives. Bill Hudson, a musician and actor known for his ’70s group, The Hudson Brothers, was married to their mother, actor Goldie Hawn, from 1976 to 1982. After the divorce, Hawn began a relationship with Kurt Russell in 1983, and the couple primarily raised Kate and Oliver alongside Russell’s son, Boston, and their son together, Wyatt Russell.
In the interview, Hudson also addresses the impact of her complicated family dynamics on her career choices.
Hudson also reveals that someone once tried to dissuade her from pursuing music due to her age. “It was when I was in my early thirties. And they basically said, ‘It’s done, it’s passed. You can’t, you’re too old.’ And you know, for me, it wasn’t just about being a performer, it was about wanting to write music. So, it kind of like, kind of resonated there for a bit. And then I was like, ‘Eh, [expletive] you.'”
The full interview with Kate Hudson will air on Sunday, April 28, at 9 a.m. ET on CBS and will be available for streaming on Paramount+.
