What can we expect from this episode
Trains are being cancelled or delayed, prices are going up, and the infrastructure is ageing. The government is reclaiming control of more and more lines. Comedian Ben Elton has been making jokes about the demise of British Rail for over 30 years, and in The Great Railway Disaster he argues that privatisation was a bad idea and should be ended.
The Ordsall Chord, an £85 million engineering marvel that currently only sees one train per hour in each direction, is his destination as he travels north through Manchester on this rail misadventure. After arriving in Huddersfield, Ben rides the Transpennine Express, Britain’s worst railway line. Beyond that, he visits the North East, where abandoned train tracks and poverty tell a story very different from one of progressive upward mobility.
Ben reveals the findings of a Channel 4 survey in which 2,000 adults were queried about their experiences with the train system, prompting participants to reflect on how disruptions on the rails have altered their routines. Ben also investigates the reliability of our train service by providing the most recent data and analysis on the problems plaguing commuters on a regular basis.
