With its new season, The Great British Dig will dig up even more historical artefacts from backyards across the United Kingdom.Hugh Dennis and his team of archaeologists sift through our lawns and flowerbeds in search of relics of the past. With the help of the locals, the team uncovers mysteries spanning centuries as they reveal the exciting discoveries hidden beneath the petunias. These range from a Roman fort to a mediaeval castle and beyond.
Dr. Chloe Duckworth, a lecturer in archaeological science at Newcastle University, field archaeologist Natasha Bilson, and author and archaeologist John Henry Phillips round out Hugh’s team of advisors. Hugh and the rest of the crew shed light on an untold part of Roman history in Cornwall at a fort that was just discovered not far from Calstock.
Despite the paucity of information available, the team’s excavation suggests that Romans did not visit the South West of England for the sole purpose of a military campaign. Hugh also travels to Coventry to check out the restored Lunt Roman Fort. The archaeologists, with the help of the locals, set out to find the fort’s lost civilian settlement and the road leading into the main gate, but they make a remarkable discovery that delves further into a previously unknown facet of Roman history.
