The Poles Revealed Series Premiere (S1EP1 ABC TV Tuesday 22 March 2022)
The Poles Revealed begins as Australia’s new icebreaker for science research, the Nuyina, leaves port in the Northern Hemisphere, for her long journey south to Antarctica. Onboard is veteran ABC science reporter Mark Horstman.
Many people imagine the Arctic and Antarctic to be much the same – white, barren icescapes of extreme cold. The first episode Polar Opposites, reveals just how different these landscapes are.
Their differences start with their geography. The Arctic is an ocean, surrounded by continents, while the Antarctic is a continent surrounded by ocean. This influences almost every aspect of their climate, biology and human history.
We see the dazzling display of colour and migration in the Arctic, as warmth hits the north – and are plunged into the depths of a blizzard in the coldest of Antarctic winters. As auroras light up the sky, a mystery that has puzzled humankind for years is finally solved.
We are given a glimpse of the secret lives of krill and find out why whales are important weapons against climate change! This is an episode that makes us fall in love with the polar regions.
Airdate: Tuesday 22 March 2022 at 9.30pm on ABC TV.
