A Yorkshire Farm returns with its seventh episode, offering viewers an insight into the busy lives of the Nicholson family and their farm in Yorkshire. In this instalment, the focus is on time management and the use of machinery to optimise their farming practices.
The episode, airing on Channel 5 on Thursday 18 April, begins with Rob and Dave Nicholson preparing for the upcoming spring lambing season. Knowing that their time is precious, they enlist the help of sheep scanner man Robert Garth to determine the number of lambs they can expect. This technology provides valuable insights and helps the farmers plan accordingly.
Meanwhile, Jules Hudson visits a soft fruit farm in Kent, where she discovers the innovative use of robots to combat fungal infections threatening strawberry crops. The episode highlights how technology is transforming the rural labour market and improving farming practices.
JB Gill, a former member of the boy band JLS, explores the world of vegetarian and vegan sausage production in Bedale, North Yorkshire. He meets with a sausage maker who utilises state-of-the-art technology to create the perfect environment for growing different types of herbs, resulting in unique sausage flavours.
The episode also takes viewers to the Southeast of England, where a producer owns the largest greenhouse complex in the UK. With cutting-edge technology, this producer grows an impressive 750,000 red peppers annually.
In Lincolnshire, farmer Ian Watson showcases his high-tech equipment, including a powerful new machine that has revolutionised working methods, especially for pea harvesting.
Back at the Nicholson farm, whizz-kid mechanic Reuben Owen takes on a unique challenge. He refurbishes a 50-year-old piece of farming machinery, demonstrating his skills and passion for restoring old equipment.
The episode concludes with a visit to North Lincolnshire, where Farm Manager Peter Harriman trials the world’s largest combine harvester, capable of collecting more than 100 tonnes of grain per hour.
