On Friday, April 26, PBS airs a one-hour special titled “Art Happens Here with John Lithgow.” The show features Emmy and Tony Award-winning actor John Lithgow as he goes back to school to celebrate and demonstrate the transformative power of arts education.
Lithgow explores four art disciplines: dance, ceramics, silk-screen printing, and vocal jazz ensemble. He collaborates with teachers and students from various organizations in Los Angeles, including Self Help Graphics & Art, the Debbie Allen Dance Academy, the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge, and the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA).
Lithgow tries his hand at singing, dancing, printmaking, and pottery, working alongside students and learning from them. The show highlights how arts education nurtures and inspires students of all ages, providing them with emotional and social development and a sense of self.
“Education involves much more than just the basic academic subjects and preparing kids for being tested and evaluated,” said Lithgow. “Arts education is an anchor that provides a child emotional and social development and a sense of who they are in the world.”
‘Art Happens Here with John Lithgow’ will be available to stream on PBS platforms, including PBS.org and the PBS App.
Art Happens Here with John Lithgow airs Friday, April 26, at 10:00 PM on PBS.
