FOX Nation Explores the Battle for the Arctic with Bill Hemmer on April 17
FOX Nation is set to present a fascinating insight into military operations and exploration in the Arctic Circle with the release of “Battle for the Arctic with Bill Hemmer.” The special, hosted by FOX News anchor Bill Hemmer, will air on Wednesday, April 17, taking viewers on a journey to one of the world’s most remote and strategically important regions.
Hemmer embarks on a trip embedded with the U.S. Navy as they conduct their “Operation Ice Camp 2024” in the Arctic Ocean. This three-week operation, previously known as Ice Exercise (ICEX), has been held every two years since 1946. However, this year’s iteration takes on heightened significance due to the increasing geopolitical tensions in the region.
The Arctic has become a focal point for global powers, with Russia and China recently ramping up their operations there. The region’s melting ice has opened up potential trade routes, and its abundance of natural resources has made it a subject of interest for many countries. Hemmer’s journey begins at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington, D.C., from where he flies to the remote Alaskan town of Deadhorse. From there, he ventures another 200 miles north over ice-covered waters to reach the Beaufort Sea and join the sailors and scientists at “Ice Camp Whale.”
Upon his arrival, Hemmer confronts the Arctic’s extreme cold and treacherous terrain, facing the constant dangers of ice cracks and encounters with polar bears. The camp serves as a training ground for personnel to adapt to these harsh conditions, but it also holds strategic importance. Eight countries have territory north of the Arctic Circle, and with Russia’s claims on the region and China’s growing ambitions, the U.S. military is keenly aware of the need to assert its presence.
Hemmer gains exclusive access to the USS Hampton, a Los Angeles-class nuclear submarine, and spends 24 hours with its crew, learning about their lives and mission. He witnesses the submarine break through the icy surface, and the challenging process of boarding involves using chain saws to cut through thick ice to reach the hatch.
The crew of the USS Hampton shared their experiences of life aboard the vessel, including the importance of traditions like serving ice cream, which boosts morale during their months of isolation. They also discuss the strategic concerns in the region, with Russia and China looming large in their minds.
The special offers a unique perspective on the challenges and importance of military operations in the Arctic Circle. It highlights the U.S. Navy’s commitment to ensuring free and open seas in the region, sending a message to global powers with competing interests.
“Battle for the Arctic with Bill Hemmer” promises to provide viewers with an insightful and immersive experience, showcasing the realities of military life in one of the world’s most extreme environments and exploring the geopolitical complexities that make the Arctic Circle a key area of focus for global superpowers.
Battle for the Arctic with Bill Hemmer airs Wednesday April 17, 2024 on FOX Nation.
