Great Australian Railway Journeys, 16 April 2024, BBC Four
In the second episode of Great Australian Railway Journeys, airing on BBC Four on Tuesday 16 April, Michael Portillo explores New South Wales, guided by his 1913 Bradshaw’s Guide. He travels from the bustling city of Sydney to the remote mining outpost of Broken Hill, located deep in the parched Outback.
Portillo begins his journey in Sydney, investigating the city’s history as a penal colony. He visits the Hyde Park Barracks, once home to convicts, and climbs the Sydney Harbour Bridge for a panoramic view of the harbour. He also tours the iconic Sydney Opera House and joins volunteers at Bondi Beach for rescue practice with the Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club.
Heading west, Portillo ventures into the Blue Mountains, where he meets indigenous guide Yamandirra, who shares insights into his people’s connection to the land. At Katoomba, Portillo experiences the thrill of riding on the steepest railway in the world.
Continuing his journey, Portillo boards the luxurious Indian Pacific Railway, one of the world’s longest trains. He travels through the rugged Outback, crossing vast distances to reach Broken Hill, a city known for its silver mining.
Broken Hill, located 570 miles from Sydney, is an isolated outpost that gained international recognition for its precious metal deposits. The city’s mining history and rugged surroundings make it a unique destination in the vast Australian landscape.
Great Australian Railway Journeys airs on BBC Four at 7.00 pm on Tuesday 16 April 2024.
