What is the documentary about
The documentary ROCK HUDSON: ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWED provides an up-close look at the life of Rock Hudson, one of the most famous leading men of the 1950s and 1960s and an icon of Hollywood’s Golden Age, whose AIDS diagnosis and death in 1985 shocked the world and altered people’s understanding of the disease. Hudson, originally named Roy Fitzgerald before being renamed “Rock Hudson” by his agent, personified romantic masculinity and heterosexuality with his tall, strong build and striking good looks. The film delves into the life of a man who secretly lived as a gay man out of fear that the public would find out about his public persona, which had been carefully crafted by his handlers and the studio system.
Following his success in epic melodramas like “All That Heaven Allows” and “Giant” (in which he starred opposite Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean), Hudson went on to star in several successful comedies with Doris Day, including “Pillow Talk” and “Lover Come Back,” and eventually became television’s highest-paid actor thanks to “McMillan and Wife” in the 1970s. ROCK HUDSON: ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWED celebrates Hudson’s enduring legacy as a cinema icon who helped change the public perception of AIDS by providing a context for his contribution as one of the last great stars of the studio system. A wake-up call nearly four years into the AIDS pandemic, Hudson’s death helped bring serious discussions about the treatment of HIV and AIDS into the mainstream, forcing a social and political reckoning.
