New Doco “Big Zuu Goes To Mecca” Set for BBC Two and iPlayer
Big Zuu, a chef and rapper, goes on a pilgrimage to Mecca to learn more about Islam and how to be a “good Muslim.” Big Zuu’s mother is from Sierra Leone and his father is from Lebanon; he has always considered Islam an integral component of his identity. But following the religion’s rules to the letter was difficult for him as a young man in London.
In the documentary titled “Big Zuu Goes To Mecca,” the Double BAFTA-winning TV chef and rapper visits one of Islam’s holiest cities for the first time. He undertakes the pilgrimage of Umrah during Ramadan, the holiest month for Muslims. This journey is significant as it allows Big Zuu to connect more deeply with his faith and gain a greater understanding of what it means to be a Muslim.
The documentary aims to showcase the diversity within the Muslim community and challenge the notion that there is only one way to practice Islam. Big Zuu hopes that his experience will inspire both Muslims and non-Muslims to learn more about the religion and engage in conversations about the importance of faith, regardless of one’s beliefs.
The program, which is a 1×60 minute episode, will air on BBC Two and available on iPlayer. It was commissioned by Daisy Scalchi, Head of Religion and Ethics within the Specialist Factual department, and executive produced by Jaimie D’Cruz, Creative Director at Acme TV.
