Contains Spoilers: In the series finale of Palm Royale, airing on Apple TV+ on Wednesday May 8, tensions reach a boiling point at the highly anticipated Beach Ball.
Set in the glamorous world of 1960s Palm Beach high society, the finale episode, titled “Maxine Throws a Party,” saw the convergence of multiple storylines, culminating in a dramatic Beach Ball hosted by Maxine Dellacorte (Kristen Wiig) and Evelyn (Allison Janney).
One of the most shocking revelations of the episode involved the true identity of Norma (Carol Burnett). It was revealed that Norma is actually Agnes, the former roommate of the real Norma, whom she allegedly killed. This secret was uncovered by Robert (Ricky Martin) after speaking with Norma’s ex-lover, Axel Rosenhips (Paul Sand). Agnes/Norma’s motive for the murder remains unclear, but it appears to be related to money and social status.
Another significant development in the finale was the discovery of Mitzi’s (Kaia Gerber) pregnancy. Mitzi, Maxine’s manicurist and confidante, revealed her pregnancy to Norma early in the episode, seeking guidance. However, the true father of her baby remained a mystery. Mitzi believed it to be Perry Donahue (Jordan Bridges), but it was later revealed that the father was actually Maxine’s husband, Douglas (Josh Lucas).
The finale also featured a shocking shooting. As the episode built towards its climax, Mary (Julia Duffy), a socialite with a history of unhinged behavior, attempted to assassinate President Nixon at the Beach Ball. However, her plan was thwarted by Linda (Laura Dern), who knocked Mary down as she pulled the trigger. Unfortunately, the bullet struck Robert, who was standing nearby, and he collapsed on the stairs. The episode ended with a distraught Maxine trying to save Robert’s life, leaving us wondering about his fate and contemplating a second season.
