Rosie Jones in ‘DISABILITY BENEFITS’ – New Comedy Series Coming to CHANNEL 4
Disability Benefits, written by Rosie Jones and Peter Fellows, was originally developed as an award-winning Channel 4 Comedy Blap and has now been commissioned as a full series by Channel 4 from Merman Television and 2LE Media.
What is Disability Benefits about
After being laid off and seeing her state benefits slashed to pieces, a young woman with little to lose decides to start her own drug ring. However, Emily (Rosie Jones) isn’t like other drug dealers on the streets; she’s smart, funny, biting, and highly educated, and she also happens to have cerebral palsy.
Emily has spent her entire life being underestimated. They either treat her like she doesn’t exist or they look down on her for doing the smallest of chores. To have one’s criminal actions completely ignored by the flawed system designed to uphold the law is the perfect cover.
The series order comes after the same-named Comedy Blap won multiple awards, including “Best Newform Drama Series” at the C21 International Drama Awards.
Rosie says
Rosie Jones says: “I am incredibly excited to be making Disability Benefits for Channel 4. It has always been my dream to have my own sitcom and now it is coming true! Bring it on!!”
We Are Lady Parts, which has been renewed for a second season on Channel 4, Stath Lets Flats, Home, and Dead Pixels (E4) all got their start in the development lab that is Channel 4’s Comedy Blaps.
Who is making the series
Disability Benefits (6×30’) was commissioned for Channel 4 by Charlie Perkins, Head of Comedy and Laura Riseam, Comedy Commissioning Editor and co-produced by Merman Television and 2LE Media. Executive producers are Clelia Mountford and Sharon Horgan for Merman Television and Michael Livingstone and Tom Thostrup for 2LE. The series producer is Charlie Laurie from Merman.
