Funny Woman: A Hilarious and Empowering Journey Through the Swinging 60s
Funny Woman, based on the novel by Nick Hornby and which is set to premiere on PBS on Sunday January 7, is an absolute gem of a comedy series that will transport viewers back to the swinging 60s. Brace yourself for a delightful journey filled with laughter, nostalgia, and a wonderful dose of girl power. The show revolves around the talented Gemma Arterton, who effortlessly shines as Barbara Parker, a small-town girl with big dreams.
Arterton plays Barbara, a young woman who works in a stick of rock factory in her home town of Blackpool. Her heart lies in comedy though and she decides to move to London to try and kick start her career. Through a mixture of good luck and determination Barbara finds herself an agent, gets rechristened Sophie Straw and gets a job working on a sitcom.
What’s truly clever about Funny Woman is the way it tackles important themes of sexism, racism, and classism, all while making you laugh out loud. Barbara’s journey as she reinvents herself as Sophie Straw in the bustling city of London is not only hilarious but also empowering. Arterton’s performance is nothing short of brilliant, showcasing her impeccable comedic timing and irresistible charm.
The supporting cast in Funny Woman is equally impressive. Rupert Everett delivers a stellar performance as Brian Debenham, Barbara’s mentor who guides her through the ups and downs of show business. David Threlfall brings warmth and authenticity to the role of Barbara’s loving father, while Alexa Davies adds a touch of humor as her flatmate Marjorie.
While the plot may have some familiar beats and a few cliches, the overall story remains engaging and enjoyable. Funny Woman strikes a perfect balance between social commentary and comedy, leaving viewers both entertained and moved. It’s a show that will have you smiling from start to finish, even through its occasional predictability.
The attention to detail in the production design and costumes truly transports you to the groovy era of the 60s. The vibrant colors, the iconic fashion choices, and the soundtrack filled with beloved hits of the time make Funny Woman a truly immersive experience. So, get ready to tap your feet along with the irresistible tunes and lose yourself in the magic of the 60s.
As a fan of comedy and period dramas, Funny Woman ticked all the boxes for me. It’s a feel-good series that exudes British charm and is sure to brighten up your day. While it may not strive for historical accuracy, it delivers an engaging story and a lovable cast of characters that will leave you wanting more.
Morwenna Banks (who also has a role as Debenham’s secretary) and Oliver Banks have crafted a six-part series that is truly uplifting and satisfying. It’s the kind of show that makes you grateful for the power of laughter and reminds you that dreams are worth pursuing. So, grab your popcorn, sit back, and let Funny Woman take you on a hilarious and heartwarming adventure through the swinging 60s. Trust me, you won’t be able to resist its charm.
Funny Woman begins on Sunday 7 January 2024 at 10.00pm on PBS.
