Pickersgill People (BBC Comedy, Bernard Hill, Sam Kelly)

Pickersgill People was an anthology series of comedies set in the northern town of Pickersgill. Each episode featured a different cast and among those appearing were Bernard Hill, Prunella Scales, Sam Kelly, Matthew Kelly, Richard Wilson, George Costigan, Antony Sher, Bryan Pringle and Philip Jackson.

Reviewing the first two episodes in The Stage (11 May 1978) Hazel Holt said there “were scenes of fruitful and memorable comedy in the frosty streets and in the hectic bedrooms.” She also felt that author Mike Stott had “a droll shrewd, individual view of human nature and very Yorkshire, which is where he comes from.” Brian Martin in the Coventry Evening Telegraph (Tues 18 Apr 1978) was less impressed saying it was like “tripe and onions… without the onions.”

Interestingly the series was actually filmed at the BBC’s Pebble Mill studios in Birmingham.
