Events this year such as the Grenfell fire and the terror attacks in Manchester and London have highlighted the hard work, bravery and dedication of front-line public sector workers. But after seven years of pay freezes and below-inflation pay caps, the people trusted with keeping us safe say they’ve had enough. Dispatches investigates what it’s really like working on the front line in pay-capped Britain.
Reporter Jackie Long meets a police officer who’s been made homeless and a nurse who skips meals. They blame the pay cap. New research for Dispatches shows how far salaries have fallen in real terms since 2010, meaning many workers are now living below the national minimum income standard.
