North Water, The (BBC-2 2018)

Period drama series The North Water, based on the novel by Ian McGuire takes us back to the mid nineteenth century for a thriller that moves between Hull and the Arctic.

At the heart of the story is Patrick Sumner a surgeon who is seeking some kind of redemption after being disgraced from the army. He signs on for a whaling expedition as the ship’s doctor and realises that the Harpooner Henry Drax is in fact a dangerous psychopath.

Andrew Haigh, says: “The novel by Ian McGuire is a darkly brilliant piece of work, propelled by a vision of the world that is both beautiful and brutal. It feels bracingly modern and is piercingly perceptive about the nature of what drives us all. I feel incredibly lucky to be given the chance to bring this story to the screen and very privileged to be doing so with the BBC.”

This gripping and original story of murder, mystery and survival has topped critic’s lists around the world and was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize and named A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice.
