48 Hours airs a new episode tonight Saturday January 14 2023 on CBS.

“Melissa Turner’s Closing Act” When Melissa Turner of Hillsborough County, Florida found her fiance, Matthew Trussler, motionless by the pool, she made a 911 call to report it. He was pronounced dead at the spot, and an autopsy confirmed that he died as a result of stab wounds.

When questioned by police on the evening of October 18, 2019, Turner originally stated that she and her partner had consumed alcohol the night before, but that she did not recall any specifics. After detectives discovered evidence from a security camera mounted on a neighbor’s garage, Turner recanted her account.

According to the prosecution, Trussler can be heard yelling at Turner yelling on the camera’s audio recording. She claimed she defended herself by stabbing her fiance when he attempted to suffocate her. Eventually, police arrested Turner and charged her with second-degree murder with a deadly weapon. Reporter Erin Moriarty of 48 HOURS spoke with Turner regarding the inquiry into Trussler’s killing and her claims of self-defense.

“I thought this was it. I thought he was going to kill me. And I stabbed him lightly in the back just to get him off me,” Turner told Moriarty. “I didn’t do what they’re saying I did. If I’m going to prison then I’m going down fighting.”
