Elliott’s long and close friendship with Kim leads to a painful personal truth at the end of his four-day debrief of Philby in Beirut (which we have flashed back to throughout the series). Elliott’s final showdown with Philby reveals the nuanced emotional motivations behind his decision to let Philby get away.

Lily has made him reflect on Philby more deeply than he would have liked to, but he is beginning to see that he and other men of his privilege and class pose a greater threat to England (and America) than any one man. And then there’s Angleton, who Philby has infected with a distrust of his friends and colleagues that will spread like a virus throughout the CIA and ultimately bring it to its knees. Since Elliott and Lily are aware of Philby’s manipulation of Angleton, they treat their suspicions of Hollis with the scepticism and caution—if not outright dismissal—they would need to prevent them from crippling British Intelligence.

Elliott receives a letter from Philby a few months later, requesting a meeting at an East Berlin pub so the two can finally put the past behind them. Not wanting to get sucked into another friendship game, Elliott visits East Berlin for Christmas in 1963 to return an umbrella Philby gave him as a token of his appreciation for his loyalty and friendship. While this is happening, the Soviet Union sends its first and only woman pilot into space in a solo mission, and Lily is invited to join the Intelligence Service.
