Britney Hamil, a young girl, was kidnapped from an Edinburgh street, and though the case nearly drove the detective to despair, Lennox remains obsessed with finding her.

The secret of the abuse that penetrated his very being drives him. This detective inspector has a mission larger than simply catching criminals; he must eradicate evil wherever he finds it.

But this kind of fervour doesn’t come without a price, and we see Lennox’s connections with people gradually dwindle until he’s left with only his old false friends and the temptation of alcohol and drugs.

Crime, however, is a story of second chances, and Lennox finds a way to keep it together. Lennox proves his case that a notorious serial killer responsible for previous crimes pinned on an innocent man murdered Britney, despite the fact that everyone else around him disagrees with him. And so, begins a chase for justice, perhaps to the death.

When the police officer and the killer finally meet, it is the killer, known only as “Mr. Confectioner,” who proves to be the more formidable of the two. Confectioner, sensing the detective’s distress, turns the tables, forcing Lennox to conduct an introspective investigation from which he may not emerge unscathed.
