Jerusalem: Builders Of The Holy City (SBS Sunday 9 April 2023)
Jerusalem: Builders Of The Holy City: Jerusalem’s been the setting for myths for almost 3000 years.
The great ancient civilizations, beginning with Judaism, were all shaped by their respective origin stories. The finest architects of the Mediterranean Basin set to work in Antiquity to make this once-forgotten city into a crown jewel of the Middle East.
The Romans erected a hilltop in the middle of the city so they could construct the Temple Mount, a massive religious structure inspired by the history of the venerable Temple of David. The biggest piece of stone used in this architectural marvel weighs 400 tons, thus extraordinary skill was required to move it.
Several centuries later, one of the first and largest Christian churches, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, was built in the heart of the city.
This massive structure was erected by Emperor Constantine over the site of Christ’s tomb. Jerusalem, although being the focus of Christianity for nearly three centuries, continued to change and adapt after each of its conquests. The Dome of the Rock, the Islamic Empire’s answer to Constantine’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre, was built on the site years later and is considered one of the seven marvels of Muslim architecture.
How did they construct the esplanade of the Temple and the Dome of the Rock? How have they managed to stay standing through countless earthquakes, wars, and conquests? The secrets of the Eternal City and its holy architects are revealed as we travel from hill to hill and culture to culture to explore the core of Jerusalem’s renowned landmarks that have witnessed 3000 years of history and mystery.
