Midsomer Murders: Book of the Dead (Acorn TV Tuesday December 12, 2023)

Midsomer Murders

Midsomer Murders: Book of the Dead airs Tuesday December 12, 2023 on Acorn TV.

Detective Barnaby finds himself embroiled in a perplexing case when the author of a book that sparked a nationwide treasure hunt is discovered dead.

The deceased, Bertram Jewel, was known for his genius puzzle setting abilities and his bestselling picture book called “Seeker.” The book tantalized readers with hidden clues within its intricate illustrations, promising a life-changing amount of treasure to anyone who could decipher them. However, despite the best efforts of skilled puzzle solvers and treasure hunters, no one managed to solve the riddles or find the elusive prize.

Now, ten years after its initial publication, Bertram’s fortune has diminished significantly. He resides with his best friend Eli Trask and Eli’s wife Dancia, along with their son who remains obsessed with “Seeker.” Determined to regain his former glory, Bertram plans a ten-year anniversary event to relaunch his book and reignite interest in the search for the hidden treasure.

As fans and enthusiasts gather in Mods Mire, an idyllic village fascinated by puzzles and mysteries, excitement mounts as Bertram announces that he is reprinting “Seeker” with an additional page of clues. However, joy quickly turns into suspicion when Billie, an interviewing journalist attending the event, reveals that she has received information suggesting Bertram had been imprisoned many years ago for a confidence trick under another name: Robert Grimes.

As doubts surface about Bertram’s true intentions and whether “Seeker” is just another con considering nobody has found the treasure in over a decade, he attempts to reassure fans and debunk these concerns. Unfortunately for him though, tragedy strikes when he is found brutally murdered in the woods.

Barnaby and Winter are called upon to investigate this shocking crime and must grapple with deciphering clues reminiscent of those found in “Seeker.” They confront the possibility that the killer could be a devoted fan pushed to extremes or someone from Bertram’s mysterious past. How far would an individual go to obtain the famed Seeker treasure?
