Oak Tree: Nature’s Greatest Survivor (BBC Four Wednesday 24 May 2023)
Oak Tree: Nature’s Greatest Survivor airs Wednesday 24 May 2023 on BBC Four.
Oak trees have a rich and dramatic history, which George McGavin explores. This film is a tribute to one of the most recognisable symbols of the British countryside and is equal parts science documentary and historical study. It aspires to show the audience what an unusual species the oak is and give them a glimpse into the life of this ancient tree.
With footage spanning an entire year, George reveals the remarkable changes the oak undergoes to survive each of the four distinct seasons.
In the autumn, George explores the soil below an oak tree to see how its roots mine for minerals. And now he understands why the superstrong oak was used to construct such historic vessels as Nelson’s flagship The Victory.
George learns about the tree’s complex adaptations to wind and cold in the winter. He learns about the importance of the oak in building, revealing that numerous well-known landmarks, such as the tower of Salisbury Cathedral, are actually enormous oak structures.
George looks into how the oak reproduces in the spring, when its pollen blankets the landscape. He learns the complex methods it employs to survive the attacks of predators intent on destroying it.
George examines the hundreds of species that call the oak home using a powerful microscope during the summer. Oak provides a type of’sustenance’ for humans as well. The oak wood barrels impart distinctive characteristics to whisky during the ageing process.
