ABC News is dedicating a week-long series to Earth Day, titled “The Power of Us: People, Climate, and Our Future.” The series, which will run from April 21 to April 26, aims to highlight innovative solutions to climate change. Led by ABC News chief meteorologist and climate correspondent Ginger Zee, the series will showcase the collective power of individuals, communities, industries, and governments in addressing one of the most pressing issues of our time.
In a statement, ABC News President Kim Godwin emphasized the network’s commitment to providing straightforward climate change coverage, building upon the success of last year’s “Power of Water” series. “Power of Us,” she said, will explore the transformative potential of actions that can be taken to address climate change.
Ginger Zee, a well-known figure in meteorology and climate journalism, shared her motivation for telling stories about the climate emergency: “I’m often asked how I stay motivated when telling stories about the climate emergency — my answer: humans,” said Zee. “Yes, people have amplified the natural warming of our planet with development and emissions, yet collective power lies in adaptation, solutions and demand for systemic change. This isn’t about individuals but the collective ‘us’ and the power we have together. I can’t wait to share stories of Americans shaping a brighter future.”
“The Power of Us” is a continuation of ABC News’ award-winning franchise focused on climate and environmental journalism. In 2024, the network’s “Power of Water” series was awarded the prestigious Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award for its comprehensive reporting on various water-related issues, including the safety of the water supply and its disproportionate impact on disadvantaged communities.
The upcoming series will be part of The Walt Disney Company and National Geographic’s global cross-platform campaign, ourHOME, which celebrates Earth Month throughout April. The campaign highlights efforts across linear, digital, streaming, and parks that contribute to protecting, restoring, and celebrating our planet.
ABC News’ coverage for “The Power of Us” will include a range of programs and platforms. “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” will examine the efforts to engage voters who prioritize the environment and climate change in the 2024 election. They will follow the Environmental Voter Project as they canvass in Pennsylvania, aiming to increase political power for voters who show up on Election Day.
“Good Morning America” will kick off the week with a look at Earthships, homes made entirely of recyclable materials, and offer tips on sustainable living practices. Throughout the week, they will also explore sustainable grocery shopping, reducing plastic consumption, and minimizing food waste.
“World News Tonight with David Muir” will shine a light on the lack of access to electricity in Navajo and Hopi Nations and profile Navajo-led companies providing off-grid solutions with solar energy. They will also showcase the resilience of the community in Shreveport, Louisiana, following a devastating storm.
“Nightline” will investigate the fast-fashion industry’s environmental impact and its contribution to clothing waste and climate change. They will explore why clothing still ends up in landfills and possible solutions, including upcycling.
“GMA3: What You Need to Know” will celebrate individuals dedicated to environmental care, including Sarah Paiji Yoo, CEO of Blueland, who offers eco-friendly household products, and teens leading initiatives to save honeybees through innovative research.
ABC News Live will feature interviews with climate change experts and advocates, including special segments on “ABC News Live Prime with Linsey Davis,” exploring topics such as solar geoengineering, the cruise ship industry’s ecosystem restoration efforts, and the sequel to the duPont Award-winning investigation, “Trashed: The Secret Life of Plastic Exports.”
ABC News Digital will provide comprehensive digital coverage, including profiles of communities impacted by climate change, the environmental impact of lab-grown diamonds, and potential solutions to global warming. ABC News Radio will also join the initiative with a segment on the weekly newsmagazine “Perspective,” exploring the potential of E-fuels to make transportation greener.
The ABC Owned Television Stations’ “On The Red Carpet Celebrates Earth Month” will look into the “Power of Us” in Hollywood, featuring filmmakers who tell stories about the natural world and highlighting the conservation and sustainability efforts of Disney parks and Hollywood stars.
ABC NewsOne, the network’s affiliate news service, will offer stories to ABC affiliates, including a look at Plastic-Free Lunch Day and the health benefits of spending time in nature through the ParkRx initiative.
With this week-long series, ABC News is dedicated to shedding light on the power of collective action in addressing climate change and offering a range of solutions and inspiring stories to its audiences.
