Join Susan Calman as she embarks on another exciting journey through a Great British City in the upcoming episode airing on Channel 5. On Friday, March 22, 2024, at 9:00 PM., Susan will be exploring the charming city of Cambridge.

In this episode, Susan begins her exploration with a relaxing punt down the River Cam alongside history enthusiast Henry Rintoul. Together, they uncover the origins of the waterways and learn about one man’s innovative plan to repurpose them when livelihoods were at stake.

To further delve into Cambridge’s rich heritage, Susan visits the Botanic Garden where she meets Head of Horticulture Sally Petitt. Here, she discovers the fascinating story of John Stevens Henslow, who transformed a “Physic Garden” into an inspiring place that would shape Charles Darwin’s groundbreaking discoveries.

Continuing her journey, Susan makes her way to Fitzbillies—a renowned bakery that has been feeding both students and town folks for over 100 years. Alison Wright reveals the intriguing history behind this iconic establishment as Susan indulges in a taste of authentic Cambridge.

Reenergised by these culinary delights, Susan heads to Coe Fen to meet farmer Mark Drew and unravel another unique aspect of Cambridge life—the centuries-old tradition of free-roaming cows within the city center. This practice holds a special place in Cambridge’s history and adds to its charm.

Sporting historian Nigel Fenner joins Susan to shed light on an unusual turf war between well-heeled students and townies while revealing how the most popular sport on Earth was created right here in Cambridge.

Susan concludes her exploration by meeting Shirley Franklin—the niece of Rosalind Franklin. Rosalind played a crucial role in capturing one of the most important photos in human history—the true structure of DNA—only to be overshadowed by rivals. Through this encounter, viewers gain insight into an unsung hero who contributed significantly to scientific progress.

Finally, Susan looks into the story of the First Eastern General Hospital. During World War I, this hospital played a pivotal role in treating over 70,000 casualties and revolutionising medical practices. Dr. Sarah Baylis shares her knowledge with Susan, shedding light on the hospital’s remarkable contributions to the war effort.
