“King of the Hill” Reboot Ordered by Hulu
Hulu has ordered a new season of the classic animated series “King of the Hill,” produced by 20th Television Animation with executive producers Mike Judge and Greg Daniels and incoming showrunner Saladin Patterson. The show, set in the modern day United States in the fictional city of Arlen, Texas, is executive produced by Michael Rotenberg and Howard Klein of 3 Arts and Dustin Davis of Bandera Entertainment.
Mike Judge, Kathy Najimy, Stephen Root, Pamela Adlon, Johnny Hardwick, and Lauren Tom are just some of the actors lending their voices to the animated series. The revival has been in the works since since Judge and Daniels celebrated “King of the Hill’s” 20th anniversary with the rest of the cast at the 2017 San Francisco Sketchfest.
Having won an Emmy® and been named by Time as one of “The Greatest TV Shows of All Time,” this Fox series is now available to watch on Hulu for its entire 13-season run. Characters in “King of the Hill” were surprisingly sophisticated and three-dimensional for animated television, and the show’s depiction of suburban Texas life was honest and affectionate.
Set in the made-up town of Arlen, Texas, the show followed the lives of Hank Hill (Mike Judge), an enthusiastic seller of propane and propane accessories, his wife Peggy (Kathy Najimy), the local Boggle champ and substitute teacher, and their 13-year-old son Bobby (Pamela Adlon), who defies any expectation his father had of a son. Peggy’s pals Minh (Lauren Tom) and meteorologist Nancy (Ashley Gardner) and Bobby’s pal Connie (Tom) all pitch in to help the Hills make sense of a world on the move. Hank’s friends, the conspiracy theorist Dale (Johnny Hardwick), the military barber Bill (Stephen Root), and the cool but inarticulate Boomhauer (Judge) also pitch in.
“We are all so excited to welcome back Hank, Peggy, and Bobby, and to see what they have to say about the world we live in and continue the conversations we began years ago,” said Craig Erwich, president, ABC Entertainment, Hulu and Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals. “This show has all of the perfect ingredients to meet this moment in animation at Hulu, and we’re so thankful to be having those conversations alongside this talented group.”
“I’m so lucky to have been a part of this show from the very beginning and couldn’t be more excited to visit Arlen, Texas, once again with Mike, Greg, and Saladin, who together are bringing a whole new perspective to the original series. We all want to thank the fans for their overwhelming support because they helped make this happen, and I can’t wait to share this new iteration through the lens of 2023 America. In the words of our beloved Peggy Hill: ‘Ho yeah!,’” said Marci Proietto, executive vice president, 20th Television Animation.
The first season of the show won an Emmy for Best Animated Program, among other honors. The show has been televised in more than 50 countries and has been translated into a number of other languages.
