WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?
“I don’t want to own anything until I find a place where me and things go together. I’m not sure where that is, but I know what it’s like. It’s like Tiffany’s.”
One of the all time great movies and starring the legendary Audrey Hepburn, the very definition of a classic movie star. Breakfast at Tiffany’s is based on the novella by Truman Capote and is now 45 years old.
Audrey plays Holly Golightly, a deliciously eccentric New York City playgirl determined to marry a Brazilian millionaire. George Peppard plays her next-door neighbour, a writer who is “sponsored” by a wealthy Patricia Neal. Guessing who’s the right man for Holly is easy of course and there is so much joy to be had in the playing of the leads. Peppard was an upcoming name to watch at the time whilst Hepburn positively lights up the screen.
Director Blake Edwards, who would go on to specialise in comedies such as The Pink Panther, here wisely focuses on the lighter elements of Capote’s script rather than the darker aspects which pervade all of Capote’s work (in fact the ending of the book is completely different to the movie). It’s hard to believe that Capote actually desperately wanted Marilyn Monroe to star in the movie, Hepburn is Holly Golightly and its hard to imagine anyone else in the role let alone Monroe. With winter coming in Breakfast at Tiffany’s is the perfect movie to curl up on the lounge with.
