In Treasures Of Albania Professor Bettany Hughes visits Albania, a nation of epic castle cities, dazzling seas, and a rich history and culture situated between the Adriatic and Ionian Seas.
Bettany visits Butrint, a historical city on the Albanian Riviera. This beautiful national park on the Adriatic coast is home to the first city in Albania to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Bettany travels to the northern part of Albania, to the beautiful Albanian Alps, to investigate the country’s historical sites. During the time when ancient Albania was giving way to medieval and Ottoman rule, a new culture developed here.
Gjirokastr is a well-preserved Ottoman town that was made famous by Nobel laureate Ismail Kadre.
One of the most recognizable features of Ottoman Albania is its many massive tower residences; here, Bettany visits one of the best maintained to learn more about the country’s history of welcoming travelers and merchants.
