What can we expect from this episode
Author Edmund Capon investigates the role of art and artists in developing Australia’s sense of national identity. ‘Strangers in a Strange Land’ (episode 1) recounts the Europeans’ initial impressions of the New World and its inhabitants. Joseph Lycett and John Glover, two convict and colonial artists, depicted a fertile landscape ready for settlement. A place that is both productive and secure.
Before Romantic artists like Eugene Von Guerard began to completely ignore indigenous people in favour of majestic panoramic landscapes, these artists romanticised indigenous culture and society. They not only made the landscape more picturesque, but also more European.
After the 1880s, a group of Australian artists working in the impressionist style began to capture the true character of the country on canvas. They did so at a crucial time in the formation of the nation, and their creations were instrumental in shaping the nation’s identity.
