TCM’s original series Two for One returns with another double feature, this time showcasing the classic films “Trouble in Paradise” (1932) and “Jewel Robbery” (1932). Both films feature a charming thief who wins over a wealthy woman, but each brings its unique twist to the tale.
“Trouble in Paradise,” directed by Ernst Lubitsch, stars Miriam Hopkins, Kay Francis, and Herbert Marshall. The story follows a gentleman thief and a lady pickpocket who join forces to con a beautiful perfume company owner. Romantic entanglements and jealousies complicate their scheme, adding a layer of intrigue. The film is known for its witty dialogue, elegant settings, and the famed “Lubitsch touch, earning its place in the National Film Registry.
“Jewel Robbery,” directed by William Dieterle, stars William Powell and Kay Francis in a tale of theft and romance. Powell portrays a suave jewel thief who charms a bored Viennese baron’s wife, played by Francis. The thief’s plan to rob a jewelry store takes an unexpected turn when he falls for his target, leading to a battle between love and dishonor. The film is noted for its light-hearted tone, witty dialogue, and risqué themes, typical of the pre-Code era.
Host Ben Mankiewicz will be joined by special guest Rian Johnson, whose choice the two movies are, the acclaimed writer and director known for films such as “Knives Out” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
