Yates Family, Sort Your Life Out, 19 March, 2024, BBC One
In the latest episode of “Sort Your Life Out,” part of the fourth series, host Stacey Solomon and her team consisting of organiser Dilly, carpenter Rob, and cleaner Iwan take on the challenge of helping the Yates family transform their cluttered home within a week. The task at hand involves a massive decluttering effort, with the family being encouraged to let go of half their possessions in order for the team to create an organised and visually pleasing space.
With Stacey’s guidance, the family begins packing all their belongings into boxes. As every single item is removed from their home, it becomes apparent just how much space had been hidden beneath all their possessions. Throughout this process, viewers are introduced to Rachel, a single mother living with her daughters Amelia (15) and Madeline (11). Dance is a shared passion among them, but with Rachel working full-time while also designing dance costumes in her limited free time, their household has become quite chaotic. Adding to the clutter are items left behind by Rachel’s ex-husband Darren since their divorce six years ago.
Once everything is packed up and transferred to a warehouse-like setting that resembles an art installation showcasing the family’s entire life story through objects—a collection that includes 103 planks of wood, 277 medals, and 829 pieces of fabric—the extent of their possessions becomes shockingly evident. It prompts contemplation on how it all managed to fit into their house in the first place.
Emotional moments arise as the family sifts through their most cherished items. Rachel even invites Darren to help sort through his abandoned belongings as they work towards creating a home free from unnecessary clutter—an environment that can better support her daughters’ neurodiversity.
Back at the house, carpenter Rob brings new life to the space with clever carpentry work that results in an impressive dance studio for Amelia and Madeline. Iwan performs a thorough spring clean while offering helpful cleaning tips along the way, and Dilly reorganises the bedrooms and spare room to fulfil Rachel’s dream of having her own sewing space.
Once only the essential items remain, they are moved back into the house before Stacey and her team stylishly refurnish it for the highly anticipated reveal to the family. The big question remains: Have they truly succeeded in transforming this cluttered household through decluttering, organising, and up-cycling alone?
