SBS’s The Good Ship Murder Review: Cozy Crime on the High Seas
Welcome aboard The Good Ship Murder!, currently airing on SBS on Friday nights and also available on SBS on Demand. Set sail for a cozy and lighthearted crime drama that will whisk you away to the sun-drenched Mediterranean. While it may not revolutionise the genre or win any major awards, this eight-part series offers a delightful escape for viewers craving a simpler and more relaxed crime-solving experience.
Comparisons have been made to other popular crime dramas like Death in Paradise, The Madame Blanc Mysteries, and The Mallorca Files, and rightfully so. With its picturesque views, tropical vibes, and relatively straightforward plotlines, The Good Ship Murder fits snugly into the category of “cosy crime drama.”
The series stars Shayne Ward, who takes on the role of Jack Grayling, the cruise ship’s new cabaret singer. Ward shines in his first major television role since his days on Coronation Street, effortlessly displaying both his acting chops and his impressive singing talent. His chemistry with fellow Coro alum Catherine Tyldesley, who plays the newly-promoted First Officer Kate Woods, adds a touch of romance and intrigue to the storyline.
When it comes to production values, The Good Ship Murder embraces a more cost-effective approach. The majority of the series takes place on a seemingly empty cruise ship which does unfortunately give the whole thing an air of cheapness and Malta finds itself standing in as various European locations throughout the show.
While it may not be groundbreaking, The Good Ship Murder delivers an enjoyable and relaxing viewing experience though. It’s the kind of show that invites you to kick back and unwind, offering a respite from the complex and intense crime dramas that often dominate the television landscape. Yes, it may have its predictable moments and performances that don’t quite hit the mark, but it more than makes up for it with its sun-soaked settings and cheerful tone.
So, if you’re in need of a little escapism and fancy an evening of light-hearted entertainment, hop aboard The Good Ship Murder.
