The Boyer Lectures are a series of public talks given by a notable Australian on pressing social, cultural, scientific, or political issues, and are named after the late Sir Richard Boyer, the former chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). On Thursday, October 19 at 8 p.m., the first lecture will air live on ABC TV and ABC iview. Beginning on Sunday, October 22 at 9.30am, ABC RN will air one of the four lectures each week.
This year’s Boyer Lectures will be given by Professor Michelle Simmons AO FRS FAA FRabc SN FTSE.
In his four-part lecture series titled “The Atomic Revolution,” Professor Simmons will discuss such topics as quantum physics, atomic-scale manufacturing, the role of women in science, and Australia’s unique position as a potential site for the world’s first error-corrected quantum computer.
At the University of New South Wales, Professor Simmons heads the Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology and also serves as CEO of Silicon Quantum Computing. For the first issue of Nature Quantum Information, she served as the journal’s Editor-in-Chief.
When it comes to quantum computing and atomic electronics, Professor Simmons is at the forefront of innovation. She invented the first single-atom transistor, the thinnest conducting wires, a method to encode and decode information on individual atoms, and the first integrated circuit built to atomic precision.
