Apple TV+ Unveils Trailer for “The Big Cigar,” With Andre Holland as Huey Percy Newton, Premieres May 17
Apple TV+ has unveiled the trailer for “The Big Cigar,” a new limited series starring Andre Holland as Huey Percy Newton, the prominent Black Panther Party leader and co-founder. The series, set to debut on May 17, promises to offer viewers a captivating glimpse into Newton’s life and his pivotal role in the Black Power movement.
“The Big Cigar” is based on the magazine article of the same name by Joshuah Bearman, who also serves as an executive producer for the series. The story revolves around Newton’s dramatic escape from the FBI as he flees to Cuba with the assistance of renowned producer Bert Schneider. The plan, centered on a fake movie production, is an ambitious and elaborate scheme that encounters numerous obstacles and challenges.
Alessandro Nivola joins the cast as Bert Schneider, the Hollywood producer who plays a pivotal role in aiding Newton’s escape. The series also features a diverse ensemble cast, including Tiffany Boone, P.J. Byrne, Marc Menchaca, Moses Ingram, Rebecca Dalton, Olli Haaskivi, Jordane Christie, and Glynn Turman.
The narrative of “The Big Cigar” is deeply rooted in historical events and sheds light on the turbulent political climate of the time. Huey Newton, a revolutionary figure, founded the Black Panther Party alongside Bobby Seale in October 1966. The party advocated for the right to self-defense for Black Americans and promoted social change through their deep involvement in the Black Power movement.
Newton’s life was marked by both triumphs and controversies. He was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the death of a police officer in 1967 but had his conviction overturned in 1970. He also faced multiple accusations of violent crimes, including assault and murder, which he vigorously denied. In 1974, facing charges for another murder, Newton fled to Cuba, returning three years later to stand trial.
The series explores the complex dynamics between Newton’s political activism and his encounters with the law. It delves into the social and historical context of the time, including the Black Panther Party’s community support programs and their deep commitment to racial justice.
“The Big Cigar” is directed by Don Cheadle, who also executive produces and stars in the series. The first two episodes, premiering on May 17, will be followed by weekly releases through June 14.
