Tasman Peninsula, Back Roads, 26 March, ABC TV
In the latest episode of Back Roads on ABC TV, guest presenter Joe O’Brien takes viewers on a journey to the Tasman Peninsula, located just an hour’s drive from Hobart. This picturesque region is known for its awe-inspiring landscapes and draws in individuals who have a deep love for adventure and a desire to escape the everyday.
During his exploration of this captivating area, Joe meets young surfer Noah Hassett and his mother Emma. They introduce him to Shipstern Bluff, one of Australia’s most dangerous big wave surf breaks. Braving freezing waters that were once home to abundant giant kelp forests, Noah and Emma share their passion for surfing amidst the powerful forces of nature.
Joe also joins Mick Baron, owner of a local dive shop, as he dives underwater to observe efforts being made by scientists to revive the endangered giant kelp species. The decline of these underwater forests has had significant ecological impacts, serving as both a marine life nursery and protection against shipping and storms.
Another remarkable encounter takes place with Palawa man Caleb Pedder. As they walk together on country, Caleb shares a deeply moving story about his ancestral connection to Fanny Cochrane Smith. Fanny holds the distinction of being the only recorded indigenous Tasmanian speaking in her native language.
The treacherous Tasman Island lies just off the peninsula’s coast. Here stands Australia’s highest operating lighthouse which served as a beacon for ships before automation in 1976. Joe visits Karl Robottom, a former lighthouse keeper who worked there in the early 70s, as well as Carol Jackson who lived on the island with her family during both the 1950s and 1970s. Their stories capture not only the breathtaking beauty but also highlight how isolation shapes one’s perception of such a unique place.
Throughout this brand new episode, viewers are introduced to the individuals who call this remarkable region home. Their deep appreciation for its natural wonders fuels their determination to safeguard it for future generations.
