THE NEWSREADER Returns: Series 2 of Hit Australian Drama Coming to BBC TWO This Autumn
The second series of Australian drama The Newsreader, starring Anna Torv (The Last of Us, Mindhunter, Fringe) and Sam Reid (Prime Suspect 1973, Lambs of God, Interview with the Vampire), as well as new cast members Daniel Gillies (The Originals, Virgin River) and Rory Fleck Byrne (This is Going to Hurt, Vampire Academy), has been picked up by the BBC.
The series, which consists of six episodes, was created, written, and produced by award-winning writer Michael Lucas (Offspring, Five Bedrooms), and it was directed by Emma Freeman (Interview with the Vampire, Stateless).
What can we expect from the second series
Helen Norville (Anna Torv) and Dale Jennings (Sam Reid), who became “The Golden Couple of News” in the first season, return to the show a year later. They give off an impression of happiness and love to the world at large. There is, however, more to the story.
The new young CEO, Charlie Tate (Daniel Gillies), has a very clear vision of the style of news he would like to see at ‘News at Six’, and Dale has proven himself to be a steady and reliable co-anchor to Helen, which impresses him. Helen, on the other hand, is at odds with the new CEO due to her mission to pursue and champion hard-hitting, uncompromising interviews, she has no qualms about criticising his plans for the show.
As 1987 progresses, the stock market around the world will rise and fall, Australia will get ready to celebrate its Bicentennial, and Helen and Dale will try to figure out what they want out of life and if it can be together.
Who is in the cast
Series one actors returning alongside Anna Torv and Sam Reid are: Robert Taylor (Longmire), Stephen Peacocke (Five Bedrooms, Whisky Tango Foxtrot), William McInnes (Unfinished Sky, Blue Heelers), Chum Ehelepola (Lodge 49, Lady Dynamite), Michelle Lim Davidson (Utopia, Get Krack!n), Chai Hansen (The New Legends of Monkey) and Marg Downey (Fast Forward, Top of the Lake: China Girl). For season two, the cast will also include Philippa Northeast (Home & Away).
Who is behind the series
The series was acquired from Entertainment One (eOne). Werner Film Productions, winners of multiple awards, makes it in collaboration with eOne and ABC Australia. ABC’s executive producers Brett Sleigh and Sally Riley are on board as producers, along with Joanna Werner (Clickbait, Secret City), Stuart Menzies (The Cry), and Emma Freeman (who also directs).
The first series of The Newsreader is now available to stream in its entirety on BBC iplayer.
